In short

Learn how to renew bike insurance online in simple steps, what documents you need, and how to keep your NCB. Renew your policy with Insurance Kro today.

You can renew bike insurance online in a few minutes. Keep your bike number and old policy details ready, compare plans, check the details, pay online, and save the new policy copy. The best time to renew is before your old policy expires, so you do not lose cover or your No Claim Bonus.

Here is the full process, step by step.

Why on-time renewal matters

When a policy expires, your bike is uninsured from the next minute. If you ride and have an accident in that gap, you pay everything yourself, and a claim can be rejected for an expired policy. You may also face a fine, because riding without valid insurance is an offence. The fine is ₹2,000 and/or up to 3 months in jail for a first offence.

Late renewal also has other costs:

  • The insurer may ask for a vehicle inspection before renewing an expired policy.
  • Your No Claim Bonus (NCB) may be lost after a long gap. Insurers usually allow renewal within about 90 days of expiry to keep NCB, but check your policy.

So set a reminder a few weeks before the end date.

What you need before you start

Keep these ready:

  • Bike registration number
  • RC copy
  • Old policy number or a copy of the policy
  • Your mobile number and email
  • Driving licence and ID proof, if asked

If you do not remember when your policy ends, our post on how to check vehicle insurance status will help you find the expiry date.

Steps to renew bike insurance online

  1. Open the renewal page. Go to our renew vehicle insurance page.
  2. Enter your bike number. The system usually pulls up your bike details.
  3. Add your old policy details. This helps carry forward your NCB.
  4. Choose the type of cover. Pick third-party only or comprehensive. Learn the difference in our guide on third-party bike insurance.
  5. Check your IDV. IDV is the current market value of your bike, and it is the most you can get for theft or total loss. Do not set it too low just to reduce the premium.
  6. Pick add-ons. Choose only what you need, such as roadside assistance or zero depreciation.
  7. Review the details. Check your name, bike number, engine and chassis number, and dates.
  8. Pay online. Use UPI, card or net banking.
  9. Save the policy. The insurer sends the policy copy on email or SMS. Keep a copy on your phone.

Should you change the cover at renewal?

Renewal is a good time to review your plan. Ask yourself:

  • Has my bike become older? Then zero depreciation may no longer be allowed, as it is usually for newer vehicles. Check the insurer's rules.
  • Do I ride more or less than before?
  • Do I want more protection, like roadside assistance or key and lock replacement?
  • Is my IDV still fair?

Protect your NCB

NCB is a discount on the own-damage premium for claim-free years. The usual slabs are 20% after 1 year, 25% after 2, 35% after 3, 45% after 4 and 50% after 5 or more claim-free years. It belongs to you, not to the bike. If you make a claim during the year, you usually lose the NCB for that year. NCB does not apply to the third-party part.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Waiting until the last day. A small delay can leave you uninsured.
  • Giving wrong details. Wrong or hidden facts can lead to a rejected claim.
  • Choosing only by premium. A very low premium may come with low IDV or fewer covers.
  • Not saving the policy copy. You may need it during a claim or a police check.

If your policy has already expired

Do not ride the bike until you have new cover. Renew as soon as you can. The insurer may ask for an inspection, and your NCB may be affected if the gap is long. We explain more in our guide on what to do when bike insurance has expired.

Rules can change and may differ by insurer, so always read your policy wording. The policy document is final. When you are ready, you can get a quote for your renewal.
