Overview
About third-party insurance
Third-party insurance is the basic cover that every vehicle must have under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. It pays for injury or death to another person and damage to their property, up to the limits set by law.
It does not pay for damage to your own vehicle. For that, you need a comprehensive plan or a separate own damage cover.
What is covered
- Injury or death of a third person (unlimited liability)
- Damage to third-party property (limited to ₹7.5 lakh)
- Compulsory personal accident cover for the owner-driver (₹15 lakh, unless you already hold similar cover)
- Legal costs as per policy terms
What is not covered
- Any damage to your own vehicle
- Theft of your vehicle
- Injury to the owner-driver beyond the PA cover
- Wear and tear or breakdown
Good to know
When third-party cover is enough, and when it is not
- It is the lowest-cost way to stay legal on the road.
- It is a fair choice for very old vehicles with low value.
- If your vehicle is newer or costly, a comprehensive plan is safer.
- Without any insurance you can face a fine of ₹2,000 and/or up to 3 months jail for a first offence.
