If your bike insurance has expired, stop riding it until you renew. Your bike is uninsured from the next minute after expiry, so any accident, theft or fine is on you. Renew as soon as you can, and expect the insurer to ask for a vehicle inspection first.

What Happens When Bike Insurance Expires

A policy works only for the dates written on it. Once the end date and time pass, your bike has no cover at all. This is called a policy lapse.

There is no grace period for protection. Even if you were late by just one day, you are not covered during that day. Some insurers allow a short window to renew and keep your discount, but that window does not give you cover.

Here is what it means in real life:

  • If you hit someone, you must pay for their injury or property damage yourself.
  • If your bike is stolen or damaged, the insurer will not pay.
  • If the police stop you, you can be fined.

Is It Illegal to Ride With Expired Insurance?

Yes. Third-party insurance is compulsory for every vehicle on Indian roads under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Riding with an expired policy is the same as riding with no policy.

The penalty is a fine of ₹2,000 and/or up to 3 months in jail for a first offence. For a repeat offence, it is ₹4,000 and/or up to 3 months. You can read more in our guide on the penalty for riding without insurance.

What You Should Do Right Away

Follow these steps once you notice the policy has expired.

  1. Check the expiry date. Look at your policy copy or check the status using your vehicle number. Our guide on how to check vehicle insurance status shows how.
  2. Stop riding the bike. If you must move it, avoid public roads where possible.
  3. Gather your papers. Keep your RC copy, driving licence, ID proof and the old policy copy ready.
  4. Ask for a renewal quote. You can renew your vehicle insurance online in a few simple steps.
  5. Complete the inspection if asked. Insurers may ask for photos or a physical check of the bike before they renew an expired policy.
  6. Pay and save the new policy. Keep the soft copy on your phone and email.

Why an Inspection Is Usually Needed

When a policy is active, the insurer already knows the bike was in good shape at the last renewal. After a lapse, they do not know what happened in the gap. The bike could have been in an accident or have old damage.

So insurers may ask for a vehicle inspection before renewing. This can be done with photos, a video or a visit, depending on the insurer. Take clear photos of all sides of the bike, the chassis number and the odometer.

If the inspection finds old damage, the insurer may not cover it. Check your policy wording for details.

What Happens to Your No Claim Bonus

NCB (No Claim Bonus) is a discount on the own-damage premium for every claim-free year. It belongs to you, not the bike. You usually keep it if you renew on time.

If you renew a little late, many insurers still allow you to keep your NCB. This is usually allowed if you renew within about 90 days of expiry, but the rule differs by insurer, so check your policy. After a long gap, you may lose your NCB.

This is why late renewal can cost you more money later. Read more about it in how a no claim bonus saves money on bike insurance or on our no claim bonus page.

Can You Claim for an Accident During the Lapse?

No. If an accident or theft happens while the policy is expired, the claim is not payable. A claim can also be rejected if you renew after the accident and try to claim for it. Giving wrong or hidden facts to an insurer is a common reason for claim rejection.

Be honest when you renew. Tell the insurer if the bike was damaged in the gap.

How to Avoid Expiry Next Time

A little planning makes renewals easy.

  • Set a phone reminder about 30 days before the expiry date.
  • Keep your policy email in a folder you can find fast.
  • Choose a plan that suits your bike. If it is a newer bike, look at the bike insurance options and compare cover types.
  • Renew early, not on the last day.

Rules can change and differ by insurer, so your policy document is the final word on what is covered.

FAQs

Can I renew bike insurance after it has expired?

Yes, you can. Insurers usually allow renewal after expiry, but they may ask for an inspection first. Your bike has no cover until the new policy starts.

Will I lose my NCB if my bike insurance expired?

Not always. Insurers usually allow renewal within about 90 days of expiry to keep NCB, but this can differ. After a long gap, you may lose it.

Can I ride my bike while I wait for renewal?

It is not safe or legal. Without valid insurance, you can be fined ₹2,000 and/or face up to 3 months in jail for a first offence. Renew first, then ride.

Do I need to buy a new policy or renew the old one?

After a long gap, the insurer may treat it like a fresh policy. You will still need your old policy details and bike papers.
