Bike Insurance Claim Process: Step-by-Step Guide

5 min read Updated November 2026 Insurance Kro Team
In short

Know the bike insurance claim process step by step: what to do after an accident or theft, documents needed and cashless claims. Ask Insurance Kro.

The bike insurance claim process is simple if you follow the steps in order. Inform your insurer quickly, do not repair the bike before the survey, share the documents, get the damage checked, and then repair and settle. For theft, a police FIR is also needed.

Here is the process in plain words, so you know what to do when it happens.

Before you claim: know your cover

A claim can be made only for what your policy covers.

  • A third-party policy pays for injury, death or property damage to another person. It does not pay for your own bike.
  • A comprehensive policy also pays for your own bike's damage from accident, fire, theft, natural calamities and man-made events like riots, as per policy terms.

If you are not sure which one you have, read our guide on own damage cover or check your policy copy.

Step-by-step claim process

  1. Stay safe and get help. If anyone is hurt, call for medical help first.
  2. Call the police when needed. Inform the police for theft, a major accident, injury or death of a third party, or a riot.
  3. Inform your insurer quickly. Late intimation can lead to a rejected claim. Use the helpline, app or website of your insurer.
  4. Take photos. Click clear pictures of the damage, the place and the other vehicle if any.
  5. Do not move or repair the bike more than needed. Wait for the surveyor to check it.
  6. Surveyor visits. The surveyor checks the damage and the repair estimate.
  7. Submit documents. Send what the insurer asks for.
  8. Repair the bike. Use a network garage for cashless, or any garage for reimbursement.
  9. Settle the claim. The insurer pays the garage or pays you, as per policy terms.

Documents usually needed

  • RC copy
  • Driving licence
  • Previous or current policy copy
  • ID and address proof
  • Claim form
  • FIR, when needed
  • Repair estimate and final bills
  • Photos of the damage

The list can differ by insurer, so ask them what is needed. Our page on claim support can help you collect the right papers.

Cashless vs reimbursement

In a cashless claim, you take the bike to a network garage. The insurer pays the garage directly. You pay only for items not covered and your deductible.

In a reimbursement claim, you pay the garage first. Then you send the bills to the insurer and get the money back.

A deductible is the part of every claim that you pay yourself. Some policies also let you pick a voluntary deductible to lower your premium, which means you pay more at claim time. Our post on cashless vs reimbursement claims explains the difference, and the idea is the same for bikes.

If your bike is stolen

Theft needs extra steps.

  1. File an FIR with the police at once.
  2. Inform your insurer.
  3. Submit your documents, along with the FIR.
  4. The police usually need to give a "non-traceable" report before the final settlement.

For theft or total loss, the most you can get is your bike's IDV, which is its current market value as agreed with the insurer.

Why claims get rejected

Claims can be rejected for reasons like:

  • Expired policy
  • Drunk driving
  • Riding without a valid licence
  • Using a private bike for commercial work
  • Late intimation
  • Wrong or hidden facts
  • Wear and tear or mechanical breakdown

Most of these can be avoided by renewing on time, giving true details and informing the insurer fast. Read more in our post on why car insurance claims get rejected, which applies to bikes in many ways.

Effect on your No Claim Bonus

If you make an own-damage claim, you usually lose your NCB for that year. For a very small repair, some owners choose to pay from their own pocket and keep the no claim bonus. Third-party claims are different, so ask your insurer how your policy treats them.

Rules can change and may differ by insurer. Always read your policy wording, because the policy document is final. If you want to review your cover before you need it, you can get a quote or visit our bike insurance page.

FAQs

How soon should I inform the insurer after an accident?

As soon as you can. Late intimation is a common reason for claim rejection.

Can I repair my bike before the surveyor comes?

Do not repair or move it beyond what is needed. Wait for the survey so the damage can be checked properly.

Do I need an FIR for every claim?

No. An FIR is usually needed for theft, major accidents, third-party injury or death, and riots. For small own-damage claims, it may not be needed.

What if my claim is rejected?

Ask the insurer for the reason in writing. Check it against your policy wording, and our claim support team can help you understand your options.
