Find out why car insurance claims get rejected, from expired policy to late intimation, and simple ways to avoid it. Read the guide and get help with claims.
Car insurance claims are usually rejected for a few clear reasons: an expired policy, drunk driving, no valid licence, commercial use of a private car, late intimation, wrong or hidden facts, wear and tear, or damage the policy does not cover. Most of these can be avoided with simple care.
No one can promise a claim will be approved, but good habits improve your chances. Let us look at each reason.
1. Expired policy
If your policy has expired on the day of the accident, the insurer will not pay. The car is uninsured from the next minute after expiry.
How to avoid it: Set reminders and renew your policy before the date. If it has already expired, read our guide on how to renew expired car insurance.
2. Drunk driving
If the driver was drunk at the time of the accident, the claim can be rejected.
How to avoid it: Never drive after drinking. Use a cab or a sober driver.
3. Driving without a valid licence
If the driver does not hold a valid driving licence, the claim can be rejected.
How to avoid it: Make sure anyone who drives your car has a valid licence for that type of vehicle. Renew your licence on time.
4. Using a private car for commercial work
A private-car policy is not valid for commercial use. If you use your car as a taxi or for paid goods transport, the claim can be rejected.
How to avoid it: If you earn money from the vehicle, take a proper commercial policy. See our commercial vehicle insurance page.
5. Late intimation
Telling your insurer too late is a common cause of rejection. The insurer needs to inspect the damage while evidence is fresh.
How to avoid it: Inform your insurer quickly after any loss. Also inform the police for theft, major accidents, third-party injury or death, and riots.
6. Wrong or hidden facts
If you gave wrong details when buying the policy, or you hide facts during a claim, the insurer can reject it. This includes past claims, car modifications, and how the car is used.
How to avoid it: Always give true and complete information. Tell the insurer about any change to the car.
7. Wear and tear and mechanical breakdown
Insurance is not a service plan. It does not pay for normal wear and tear, ageing of parts or mechanical failure that is not caused by an insured event.
How to avoid it: Service your car on time. Know what your policy excludes.
8. Engine damage after starting a flooded car
If your car is in floodwater and you start the engine, water can enter and damage it badly. Such engine damage from water ingress usually needs the engine-protection add-on, and the claim can be rejected otherwise.
How to avoid it: Do not start the car in floodwater. Call for a tow. See flood damage and car insurance and our guide to engine protection cover.

FAQs
What is the most common reason for claim rejection?
Common reasons include an expired policy, late intimation, wrong or hidden facts, and breaking policy rules such as drunk driving or no valid licence.
Can a claim be rejected for late reporting?
Yes. Late intimation is a common reason. Inform your insurer quickly after any loss.
Will third-party claims be rejected too?
Third-party cover is a legal requirement, but a valid policy is still needed. Claims for your own damage under third-party-only cover will not be paid.
Can I avoid rejection completely?
No one can promise that. But keeping the policy valid, giving true facts and following the claim steps greatly improves your chances.
