You can usually renew an expired car insurance policy by buying a new one from the same or a different insurer. The insurer may ask for a vehicle inspection first. Do it as soon as you can, because your car is uninsured from the moment the policy expires.
What happens when car insurance expires
If your policy ends and you do not renew it, your car is uninsured from the next minute. Any accident in that time is not covered. You would pay for your own repairs, and you could also be responsible for harm to other people.
Driving without valid insurance is also against the law. The penalty is a fine of ₹2,000 and/or up to 3 months in jail for a first offence. For a repeat offence, it is ₹4,000 and/or up to 3 months. Our post on penalty for driving without insurance explains this more.
Risks of waiting too long
The longer the gap, the more problems you may face:
- No cover: Any damage or claim in the gap is not paid.
- Inspection: Insurers may ask for a vehicle inspection before renewing an expired policy.
- NCB loss: Your No Claim Bonus may be lost after a long gap.
- Legal trouble: You can be fined for driving without valid insurance.
Step-by-step: how to renew expired car insurance
- Check the policy end date. Look at your old policy copy, email or SMS. You can also check the status using your vehicle number.
- Stop driving the car. Until you have a valid policy, avoid using the car on the road.
- Keep your details ready. You will need your RC copy, driving licence and previous policy copy.
- Choose your cover. Pick third-party or comprehensive cover. Check the IDV and add-ons.
- Complete the inspection if asked. The insurer may ask for photos or a visit to check your car's condition.

Why the insurer may ask for an inspection
When a policy is active and you renew on time, there is usually no inspection. After a lapse, the insurer does not know the condition of your car. It may have been damaged in the gap.
So the insurer may want to check it before giving cover. This may be done with photos, a video or a short visit. Any damage that already exists is usually not covered.
Will you keep your No Claim Bonus?
NCB is a discount on the own-damage premium for claim-free years. It belongs to you, not your car. It is usually kept if you renew on time. Insurers usually allow renewal within about 90 days of expiry to keep NCB, but check your policy wording.
If you wait longer, you may lose it. The usual NCB slabs go from 20% after 1 year up to 50% after 5 or more claim-free years, so losing it can cost you. Read more on our no claim bonus page.
Remember, NCB does not apply to the third-party part of the premium. And you lose it if you make a claim in that year.

Tips to avoid expiry next time
- Set a reminder a few weeks before the end date.
- Save the policy end date in your phone calendar.
- Renew a few days early.
- Keep your phone number and email updated with the insurer.
- Ask about auto-renewal options, if your insurer offers them.
Can you switch insurers when renewing?
Yes, you can usually switch insurers at renewal. Compare the cover, the IDV, the add-ons and the claim process, not only the price. If your old policy lapsed, a new insurer may also ask for an inspection.
Rules differ by insurer, so check your policy wording and ask questions before you pay. Rules can also change, and your policy document is always the final word.
