Goods carrying vehicle insurance is a commercial policy for mini trucks, tempos, pickups and other vehicles that move goods for business. Third-party cover is compulsory by law. You can add own damage cover to protect your own vehicle, which is how you earn your living.

What Is Goods Carrying Vehicle Insurance?

A goods carrying vehicle is any vehicle used to move goods. This includes mini trucks, tempos, pickup vans, small carriers, tippers and larger goods vehicles.

The policy is made for business use. These vehicles carry heavy loads, run on long routes and work in tough conditions. A private-car or bike policy is not valid for this use.

See our goods vehicle insurance page for a quick overview. If you run a bigger truck, our truck insurance guide goes deeper.

Is It Compulsory?

Yes. Third-party insurance is compulsory for every vehicle on Indian roads under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

If you drive without valid insurance, the penalty is a fine of ₹2,000 and/or up to 3 months in jail for a first offence. For a repeat offence, it is ₹4,000 and/or up to 3 months (Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019).

Third-party insurance is the legal minimum. It does not pay for damage to your own vehicle.

What Is Covered

Most goods vehicle policies have these parts.

  • Third-party liability: Pays for injury, death or property damage to another person. Property damage liability is limited to ₹7.5 lakh. Injury or death liability is unlimited.
  • Own damage: Covers your vehicle for accident, fire, theft, natural calamities like flood and earthquake, and man-made events like riots, as per policy terms.
  • Personal accident cover: Compulsory cover of ₹15 lakh for the owner-driver, unless the owner already has a similar cover. It applies to the owner-driver only.

Read our guides on third-party insurance and comprehensive insurance to understand the difference.

What Is Not Covered

Knowing the limits protects you from a surprise later. A policy usually does not pay in these cases:

  • The policy has expired.
  • The driver was drunk.
  • The driver had no valid licence.
  • The vehicle was used in a way that is not allowed by the policy.
  • Normal wear and tear or mechanical breakdown.
  • Wrong or hidden facts were given to the insurer.
  • The claim was reported very late.

The goods you carry may also not be covered by the vehicle policy. Goods in transit usually need a separate cover. Ask about this and check your policy wording.

Add-Ons for Goods Vehicles

Add-ons can make a claim smoother. Terms differ by insurer, and some are not offered for older or heavy vehicles.

  1. Zero depreciation: Usually for newer vehicles, often up to around 5 years old. It means a higher pay-out for replaced parts.
  2. Roadside assistance: Helps on long routes when the vehicle breaks down.
  3. Engine protection: Helpful where roads get flooded.
  4. Consumables cover: Pays for small repair items.
  5. NCB protection: Helps you keep your discount after a claim, within limits.
  6. Tyre protection: Useful for vehicles that run long distances.

Do not buy all of them. Choose what matches your route, your load and your budget.

How to Choose the Right Policy

Keep the process simple.

  1. Note your vehicle type, make, model, age and registration number.
  2. Be clear about the use. Tell the insurer what you carry and where you drive.
  3. Choose third-party only or comprehensive cover.
  4. Pick add-ons that fit your work.
  5. Check the garage network on your usual routes for cashless repair.
  6. Set a reminder to renew before the date ends.

If you have many vehicles, ask about a fleet insurance policy. It puts all your vehicles under one policy for easier renewal and admin. You can also renew your vehicle insurance online when the date is near.

Making a Claim Smoothly

When something goes wrong, stay calm and follow these steps.

  1. Make sure everyone is safe.
  2. Inform the insurer quickly. Also inform the police for theft, a major accident, third-party injury or death, and riots.
  3. Do not move or repair the vehicle beyond what is needed before the surveyor checks it.
  4. Take clear photos of the damage and the place.
  5. Submit your documents: RC copy, driving licence, previous policy, ID proof, claim form, FIR when needed, repair estimate and bills.
  6. Get the repair done and settle the claim.

In a cashless claim, you repair at a network garage and the insurer pays the garage directly. You pay for non-covered items and the deductible. In a reimbursement claim, you pay first and claim the money back later with bills. Our claim support page explains more.

FAQs

Can I insure a mini truck with a private vehicle policy?

No. A private policy is not valid for commercial use. You need a goods carrying or commercial policy.

Does the policy cover the goods I carry?

Usually the vehicle policy does not cover goods in transit. This often needs a separate cover, so ask your insurer.

Is comprehensive cover necessary for a tempo?

It is not compulsory, but third-party cover does not pay for damage to your own vehicle. Many owners choose comprehensive cover for that reason.

What if my vehicle is used by a hired driver?

The driver needs a valid licence. A claim can be rejected if the driver has no valid licence, so check this before every trip.
