E rickshaw insurance is compulsory by law and protects your income. Learn what it covers, battery cover options and renewal tips. Get a quote today.

E-rickshaw insurance is a commercial policy for battery-powered three-wheelers that carry passengers. Third-party cover is compulsory by law. A comprehensive policy also covers your own e-rickshaw, and some insurers offer battery cover, which matters because the battery is a costly part.

What Is E-Rickshaw Insurance?

An e-rickshaw is an electric three-wheeler used to carry passengers for money. This makes it a commercial, passenger-carrying vehicle. It needs a commercial policy. A private-vehicle policy is not valid for commercial use.

Electric vehicles are insured in the same way as petrol and diesel vehicles. The same basic rules apply, with some extra covers for electric parts. You can read about the wider group on our electric vehicle insurance page.

Why It Matters

Your e-rickshaw is your daily income. If it is damaged, stolen or involved in an accident, you lose both the vehicle and your earnings. Insurance helps you manage this risk.

It is also the law. Third-party insurance is compulsory for every vehicle on Indian roads under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988.

The penalty for driving without valid insurance is a fine of ₹2,000 and/or up to 3 months in jail for a first offence. For a repeat offence, it is ₹4,000 and/or up to 3 months (Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019).

What Does It Cover?

There are two main choices.

  • Third-party only: Pays for injury, death or property damage to another person. Property damage liability is limited to ₹7.5 lakh. Injury or death liability is unlimited. It does not pay for damage to your own e-rickshaw.
  • Comprehensive: Includes third-party cover and own damage cover. Own damage covers accident, fire, theft, natural calamities like flood and earthquake, and man-made events like riots, as per policy terms.

The owner-driver also gets compulsory personal accident (PA) cover of ₹15 lakh, unless the owner already has a similar cover. It applies to the owner-driver only.

Passengers are usually treated as third parties. Check your policy wording for how they are covered.

Battery and Charger Cover

The battery is often the most costly part of an electric vehicle. Insurers may offer extra covers for it. Terms differ by insurer, so read them carefully.

  • Battery cover: May help with damage to the battery in certain cases, as per policy terms.
  • Charger and cable cover: May cover the charger and cables.
  • Home charging unit cover: May cover a charging unit installed at your place.

A normal policy does not pay for wear and tear, so battery ageing is usually not covered. Ask the insurer what is covered and what is not before you buy. Our guide on the EV battery cover add-on explains this in more detail.

Other Add-Ons You May Consider

  • Zero depreciation: Usually for newer vehicles, often up to around 5 years old. It gives a higher pay-out on replaced parts.
  • Roadside assistance: Helps if the e-rickshaw stops on the road, such as with a dead battery or breakdown.
  • Consumables cover: Pays for small repair items.
  • NCB protection: Helps you keep your discount after a claim, within limits.

Not every add-on is available for every e-rickshaw. Check the age limit and claim limit for each one.

Documents You Usually Need

  • RC copy of the e-rickshaw.
  • Driving licence.
  • Previous policy copy, if you are renewing.
  • ID and address proof.
  • Permit or other papers, if the insurer asks.
  • For a claim: claim form, FIR when needed, repair estimate and bills, and photos of damage.

For a new e-rickshaw, also keep the purchase invoice. See our new vehicle insurance page if you have just bought one.

Claims and Renewal Tips

When something goes wrong:

  1. Stay safe and move people away from danger.
  2. Inform the insurer quickly. Inform the police for theft, a major accident, third-party injury or death, or riot.
  3. Do not move or repair the vehicle beyond need before the surveyor checks it.
  4. Submit your documents and complete the repair.

A cashless claim means the insurer pays the network garage directly. You pay non-covered items and the deductible. In a reimbursement claim, you pay first and claim later with bills.

Do not let the policy expire. If it does, the e-rickshaw is uninsured from the next minute, and the insurer may ask for an inspection before renewing. You can renew your vehicle insurance early to stay safe. Claims can be rejected for expired policy, drunk driving, no valid licence, late intimation or hidden facts, so always be honest.

When you are ready, get a quote to compare options. Rules can change and differ by insurer, so your policy document is the final word.

FAQs

Is insurance compulsory for an e-rickshaw?

Yes. Third-party insurance is compulsory for every vehicle on Indian roads, including e-rickshaws.

Is e-rickshaw insurance different from a petrol auto policy?

The basic structure is the same. The difference is that insurers may offer extra covers for the battery and charger.

Does the policy pay for battery damage?

It depends on the insurer and the add-on. Wear and tear is usually not covered, so check the policy wording.

Can I use a private policy for an e-rickshaw?

No. A private policy is not valid for commercial use. You need a commercial or passenger-carrying policy.
