Commercial vehicle insurance is a policy for vehicles used to earn money, like taxis, trucks, autos, buses and e-rickshaws. Third-party cover is compulsory by law, and a private-car or bike policy is not valid for business use. The right policy depends on whether you carry goods or passengers.
What Is Commercial Vehicle Insurance?
A commercial vehicle is any vehicle used for business. It may carry goods, carry passengers or be used for work like a service or delivery job.
Commercial vehicle insurance protects you from money loss when something goes wrong on the road. Like private vehicles, it can include third-party cover and own damage cover. It is built for vehicles that run more hours, carry heavier loads or carry other people.
Our commercial vehicle insurance page gives a quick overview of the options.
Is It Compulsory?
Yes. Third-party insurance is compulsory for every vehicle on Indian roads under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. This includes all commercial vehicles.
If you drive without valid insurance, the penalty is a fine of ₹2,000 and/or up to 3 months in jail for a first offence. For a repeat offence, it is ₹4,000 and/or up to 3 months (Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019).
A private-car policy is not valid for commercial use. If you use a private vehicle for business and make a claim, it can be rejected.
Main Types of Commercial Vehicle Insurance
Policies are usually grouped by what the vehicle does.
- Goods carrying vehicle insurance: For trucks, mini trucks, tempos and other goods carriers. See our goods vehicle insurance page and the guide on goods carrying vehicle insurance.
- Passenger carrying vehicle insurance: For buses, vans, autos, e-rickshaws and similar vehicles that carry people.
- Taxi and cab insurance: For cabs used for hire. See taxi and cab insurance for more.
- Miscellaneous vehicles: For special vehicles like tippers, cranes or work vehicles. Terms differ by insurer.
- Fleet policies: One policy for many vehicles, which makes renewal and admin easier.
What Does It Cover?
A commercial policy usually has two parts.
- Third-party liability: Pays for injury, death or property damage to another person. Property damage liability is limited to ₹7.5 lakh, and injury or death liability is unlimited.
- Own damage: Covers your own vehicle for accident, fire, theft, natural calamities like flood or earthquake, and man-made events like riots, as per policy terms.
A third-party policy does not pay for damage to your own vehicle. A comprehensive policy gives both parts and lets you add extras.
There is also compulsory personal accident (PA) cover of ₹15 lakh for the owner-driver, unless the owner already has a similar cover. It applies to the owner-driver only.
Useful Add-Ons for Business Vehicles
Add-ons can reduce your repair costs and keep your vehicle on the road. Terms differ by insurer. Common ones include:
- Zero depreciation, usually for newer vehicles.
- Roadside assistance.
- Engine protection, which is useful in flood-prone areas.
- NCB protection.
- Consumables cover.
- Battery cover for electric commercial vehicles.
Some add-ons may not be offered for heavy or very old vehicles. Check the policy wording before you buy.
Who Needs Commercial Vehicle Insurance?
You need it if you own or run any vehicle for business.
- Taxi and cab owners and drivers.
- Transporters and truck owners.
- Small traders with a mini truck or tempo.
- Auto and e-rickshaw owners.
- School, tour and staff bus operators.
- Companies with many vehicles, who can look at a fleet policy.
Even if you drive the vehicle yourself, you need a commercial policy. A private policy will not protect you.
How to Choose the Right Policy
Keep it simple and follow these steps.
- Decide how the vehicle is used: goods, passengers or both.
- Note the vehicle details: type, make, model, age and registration number.
- Pick the cover type: third-party only, or comprehensive.
- Choose useful add-ons.
- Compare quotes and read the exclusions.
- Renew on time to avoid a lapse.
Claims can be rejected for reasons like an expired policy, drunk driving, driving without a valid licence, using a vehicle for the wrong purpose, late intimation, or wrong or hidden facts. Be honest and report claims quickly. You can get a quote and ask questions before you decide.
Rules can change and differ by insurer, so your policy document is the final word.
FAQs
Can I use a private car policy for a taxi?
No. A private-car policy is not valid for commercial use. You need a commercial or passenger-carrying policy.
Is third-party cover enough for a commercial vehicle?
It is the legal minimum. But it does not pay for damage to your own vehicle, so many owners choose comprehensive cover.
Does the policy cover the driver?
Compulsory personal accident cover of ₹15 lakh applies to the owner-driver, unless the owner already has similar cover. Cover for other drivers or cleaners may need separate options.
Can I insure many vehicles under one policy?
Yes. A fleet policy covers many vehicles under one policy for easier renewal and admin.
